Sony Xperia Z2 Vs. Samsung Galaxy S5
A Comparison of the Sony Xperia Z2 and Samsung Galaxy S5
After the Mobile World Congress, we can now compare two of the best smartphones of 2014; the Sony Xperia Z2 and Samsung Galaxy S5. These two phones have quite a lot of similarities like high quality cameras, waterproof bodies, 1080p HD displays and Snapdragon 801 processors. But there are quite a few differences as well and as most of you would agree, small details do matter in smartphones. Let’s have a detailed look on these flagship smartphones and how they do against each other.
Sony Xperia Z2 and Galaxy S5 are quite similar in terms of display screen. Both phones have a screen with Full HD resolution. The Xperia Z2 has a 5.2in display, while Galaxy S5 is 0.1 in smaller. This gives S5 a slightly higher pixel density but it’s quite negligible. Samsung has retained the Super AMOLED technology in their new phone. On the other hand Sony uses their Triluminos technology, based on Live Color LED technology, which produces a sharper and brighter image without any oversaturation.
Winner: Sony has always been good at making display screens and they’ve used their prowess to get ahead once again in this department. Sony Xperia Z2 is the winner here.
Form Factor and Build Quality:
The two flagship mobile phones have different dimensions and weight ratios. Samsung Galaxy S5, although taller and wider than its predecessor, is still shorter than the Z2 but it feels a bit more manageable in terms of size. Sony Xperia Z2 is 20g heavier, but that’s because they use materials such as glass and aluminium in chassis that gives it a premium finish. Samsung S5 is not the first phone which is water and dust proof (Galaxy S4 active was the first one), but it is the first flagship that adapted it as a standard feature. Although Xperia Z2 is better in water protection, Galaxy S5 is rated higher in dust protection. One important thing to note is that Samsung Galaxy S5 has a removable rear cover which generally is a good feature but if not sealed properly the water and dust protection can blow right in your face.
Winner: It mostly depends on users whether they prefer weight and size over build quality. So it’s a tie between Sony Xperia Z2 and Samsung Galaxy S5 as Xperia Z2 has superior build quality but SGS5 is lighter and slightly smaller.
Both Galaxy S5 and Xperia Z2 have high-resolution cameras with LED flash. The sony Z2 has a 20 MP camera while S5 is slightly behind in terms of Mega pixels with 16 MP. If you know even a little about cameras, you’d know that it’s not the only thing that matters but Sony outweighs Samsung in terms of sensor size and aperture size as well. The Sony Xperia Z2 has slightly bigger sensor of 1/2.3″ than the 1/2.5″ one present in the S5 to go with the higher resolution. Both smartphones have similar 2 MP front cameras which can record videos in 4k resolution i.e about 4 times the resolution of full HD!
Winner: Even though Samsung S5 has a good camera with some of the most useful software features i.e. fast focus and selective focus. But Sony Z2 certainly has a better camera in terms of hardware, so Xperia Z2 is the winner here.
Hardware Processor and GPU:
Both the mobile devices are quite similar in this department. Xperia Z2 and Galaxy S5 both have Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 801 quad-core processor and the Adreno 330 GPU. The difference is that the Galaxy S5 has higher CPU clock at 2.5GHz as compared to Xperia Z2’s 2.3GHz, which makes almost difference in terms of performance as reported by Qualcomm itself. But Sony Xperia Z2 has a 3GB RAM, 50% more than its competitor, making it a very efficient device.
The Xperia Z2 only comes with a 16GB internal storage. On the other hand, the Galaxy S5 is also available in 32GB. Both smartphones support micro SD external memory, expandable up to 128 GB.
Winner: Samsung Galaxy S5, because its processor has slightly higher clock speed and more storage space. Sony Xperia Z2’s larger RAM will make a difference in a few years but as of 2014, Galaxy S Five is better, but only just.
On top of Android 4.4.2 KitKat, Galaxy S5 has a new TouchWiz user interface. It provides the phone with reworked menus, flatter icons and various new features such as kids’ mode and private mode.
The Z2 also runs on Android 4.4 KitKat, with its own simpler interface. Sony has included various new functions like Smart Call function which enables you to answer calls with gestures. Sony has also included “What’s new” app which acts as a recommendation engine for new apps and media.
Winner: Samsung has put some serious efforts into making Galaxy S5 more useful by introducing features that can really make a difference, whereas Sony has filled their device with some irritating bloatware. So Samsung Galaxy S5 is the winner.
Xperia Z2 includes a 3200 mAh non-removable battery in it. This powerful battery gives long talk time but with large screen and powerful RAM and CPU, the stand-by time is not that much. You can watch 7 hours of HD videos on one charge, which is good but not great per se.
On the other hand, Galaxy S4 has a removable 2800 mAh battery. But with smaller screen size and different display technology you can watch HD videos for up to 12 hours, which is quite impressive. S5 also includes a Ultra Power Saving Mode which shuts down all unnecessary apps and connection and show images in black and white to improve battery life.
Winner: Samsung Galaxy S5
The phones are not officially launched in Pakistan yet but they are expected to have quite similar price. Both Samsung and Sony have priced their flagship phones at $800. Once introduced, they are going to be two of the most expensive phones in Pakistan with price expected to be around 80k mark.
Winner: Undeclared for now
The Sony Xperia Z2 and Samsung Galaxy S5 are quite similar smartphones. They have many comparable features, which makes the competition between them very tough. There are few design and software features that differentiate them from one another. The additional features that make Galaxy S5 seem like a better deal are the heart rate monitor, fingerprint scanner and the power save mode. On the other hand, the Xperia Z2 has better design and also simpler user interface with many useful apps.
