Motorola Announces Modular Phone Project
Motorola company has announced a modular phone project called Ara. This means that you will be able to customize your mobile phones the way you can customize your desktop computer with Processor, Hard disk , memory , graphics card and display etc. Its a very cool concept which was also raised in this video few month ago.
So according to this idea you will be able to buy a basic phone casing like you did with desktop PC and then customize your phone with your display screen , memory size , processor and camera etc. Although the idea looks great but will it work in reality ? Phones are becoming more slimmer each day and thats how people want them to be. Manufactures are able to keep the size low by high level of integration between components , Will this modular design be able to keep the size small ? Will everyone be able to just plug out and plugin new components that easily ?
Also there is a big question if the phone manufactures will actually like this idea ? If they do make this phone wont it effect there own sales ? Motorola says
Our goal is to drive a more thoughtful, expressive, and open relationship between users, developers, and their phones. To give you the power to decide what your phone does, how it looks, where and what it’s made of, how much it costs, and how long you’ll keep it. –
I believe its only a research project and wont see the actual market shelves anytime soon. Although motorola has been working on this project for one year now. One thing i would certain like to be able to change in my phone is the battery size.
Or maybe this phone will attract a certain type of techy consumers. What happens when you drop this phone in public place and it goes into different pieces, imagine you are collecting processor , memory components 🙂 What do you think ? Would you buy this phone ?
