What Is A Android? – Definition & Origins
(The mark Twain)
What is a Android? Well we have all heard of it at one time or another….maybe in a movie or tv serial back in the 70’s or 80’s. Or if you’re a newer model of the 90’s or the 21st century then you probably know it as something that runs your smartphone……
So now you’re thinking why would reference to android come up in movies or T.V. serials of the 70’s or 80’s, well the producers of those serials time travelled……
I really wish that, but as Occam’s razor goes the following reason is simpler.
So whats is a android, the official definition of the word Android according to Webster’s dictionary is;
Android: – “An Automaton (robot) made to simulate a human being; A humanoid robot.”
Its supposed origin is from the Greek word: Androeides meaning manlike and was probably termed android as far back as the 1700’s (dictionary.reference.com)
That means your great great great grand daddy might have heard of Android as well. 🙂
But the word became more prevalent and widely used with the advent of movies and more so with the explosion of sci-fi movies and series during the 70’s and 80’s. In fact the oldest depiction of an android is in a silent black & white movie of the 20’s called “Metropolis”. Some other famous android movies throughout the20th century are given below…..
The Wizard Of Oz (1939)
The Day the Earth Stood Still (1951)

If you’re into such sci-fi movies I suggest that you search “Android in movies” on Google for a more comprehensive list.
Well that’s it for the Androids of the 20th Century; next we’ll be talking about the Android of the 21st Century which has shaken up the current mobile/cellular smartphone market.
